The paper is a resource-allocation problem
An objective examination is not a test of everything you know; it is a test of how efficiently you convert limited time into marks. Two candidates with identical knowledge can differ by twenty marks purely because of the order in which they attempted the paper. Treating the paper as a resource-allocation problem is the single most useful mental shift a candidate can make.
Three passes, not one
Do not attempt questions in printed order. Instead, move through the paper in three deliberate passes.
- First pass: solve only what you can finish in under thirty seconds. This typically secures 45–55 percent of the paper with very low error risk.
- Second pass: return to questions that require calculation or reasoning but are clearly solvable. Give each a strict upper limit of ninety seconds.
- Third pass: consider the remaining questions for educated guessing, and only then decide whether to mark them.
When is guessing mathematically profitable?
With four options and a penalty of one-fourth mark for a wrong answer, a purely random guess has an expected value of zero — you neither gain nor lose over many attempts. The moment you can eliminate even one option, the expected value turns positive, and eliminating two makes guessing clearly profitable.
The practical rule follows directly: never mark a question where all four options look equally plausible, and always mark a question where you have confidently ruled out at least one option. Candidates lose marks not because they guess, but because they guess without eliminating.
The elimination habit
Elimination is a skill you can train during practice. When you attempt a quiz, force yourself to state why each wrong option is wrong, not merely why the right one is right. Options in well-set papers usually fail for identifiable reasons: they belong to the wrong time period, confuse two similar names, reverse a cause and effect, or use an absolute word such as 'always' or 'only' that rarely survives scrutiny.
Reducing silly mistakes
Analysis of mock tests shows that most candidates lose more marks to careless errors than to genuine ignorance. The common causes are misreading 'not' or 'except' in the question stem, choosing the correct fact but the wrong option letter, and continuing a calculation after realising the approach is wrong.
Two habits fix nearly all of this: underline the negative word in every question stem as you read it, and re-read your chosen option letter once before moving on. Both together cost about four seconds per question and typically recover far more marks than they cost.
Build the strategy through timed practice
A strategy that has never been rehearsed collapses under examination pressure. Practise with a visible timer, attempt full sets rather than isolated questions, and record your accuracy separately from your attempt count. Accuracy below eighty percent usually means you are guessing too aggressively; accuracy above ninety-five percent with a low attempt count usually means you are being too cautious. The optimal zone for most objective papers sits between those two extremes.
